Pedorthists Recognised on Australia’s 2025 Occupation Shortage List

Following a historic milestone late last year — when pedorthists were formally recognised in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ new Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) — the profession has now achieved another significant step forward: inclusion on the 2025 Occupation Shortage List (OSL) published by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA).

This marks the first time pedorthists have appeared on the national shortage list, highlighting the growing demand for allied health practitioners who specialise in foot and ankle biomechanics, orthopaedic footwear, and mobility optimisation — improving daily function and preventing complications.

Pedorthists are listed under:

  • Occupation Group: 262999 Allied Health Physical and Sensory Therapy Professionals not elsewhere classified (nec)
  • Skill Level: 1 — AQF Bachelor Degree or higher qualification

The Occupation Shortage List identifies roles where employers face significant challenges in filling vacancies across Australia. While overall shortages have eased slightly this year, Jobs and Skills Australia notes that health professions remain among the hardest to fill — reinforcing the essential role of pedorthists within the allied health sector.

This recognition builds on years of advocacy and collaboration by the Pedorthic Association of Australia (PAA) to ensure pedorthists are properly represented within Australia’s national standards and workforce data. Inclusion in both OSCA and the OSL strengthens the profession’s visibility and supports ongoing efforts to advance education pathways, regulatory development, and workforce planning.

The PAA extends its sincere thanks to all members and contributors who supported this process — from consultations and submissions to sustained engagement with government and allied health bodies. Together, these milestones reflect the collective effort to ensure the pedorthic profession continues to grow and be recognised for its essential contribution to advancing foot health, maintaining mobility, and preventing disability across Australia.
