Pedorthic Footwear Standards
Introducing the Pedorthic Footwear Standards
The Pedorthic Association of Australia (PAA) is proud to release the Pedorthic Footwear Standards (Version 1, January 2026), a nationally aligned framework defining the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture, modification, classification and prescription of Pedorthic Footwear in Australia.
These Standards provide a clear and consistent reference to support safe, fit-for-purpose and transparent footwear provision across health, disability and aged-care systems.
Why the Standards Matter
Pedorthic Footwear plays a critical role in improving mobility, reducing pain, preventing complications and supporting independence for people with lower limb conditions.
The Pedorthic Footwear Standards:
- Establish nationally consistent terminology and classification
- Define minimum technical and design requirements
- Support quality assurance and clinical decision-making
- Assist funding bodies and service providers with appropriate classification
- Strengthen safety, transparency and accountability across the sector
The 2026 edition supersedes previous minimum specifications and reflects developments in clinical practice, materials, manufacturing techniques and system alignment.
Classification of Pedorthic Footwear
The Standards define eight categories of Pedorthic Footwear:
- Extra-Depth Footwear
- Balance-Enhancing Footwear
- Indoor Footwear
- Activity-Specific Footwear
- Pedorthic Footwear Modifications
- Pedorthic Semi-Custom Footwear
- Pedorthic Modular-Custom Footwear
- Pedorthic Custom-Made Footwear
Together, these categories provide clarity around scope, prescription and technical requirements across varying levels of complexity.
Developed Through Consultation and Professional Collaboration
The Standards were developed through a structured, evidence-informed process led by the PAA, with contributions from Certified Pedorthists, Registered Podiatrists, academic experts and sector stakeholders.
They have been formally endorsed by supporting organisations in recognition of their role in strengthening quality, safety and consistency in the provision of Pedorthic Footwear in Australia.
